ISIS Pitagora, Tuesday March 24th
Early as 8am we went to the ISA Space Geodesy Centre near Matera. Professor L. Garramone welcomed us and presented with a lot of teaching the basic principles of space geodesy and some of the many activities in which the center is involved: measuring the Earth-Moon distance, the size variations in the Earth's crust; monitoring tectonic plates, marine pollution in the Mediterranean Sea; management support and prevention of natural disasters; gravimetry etc. The listening was very attentive and we were allowed to visit some of the facilities.
After the lunch break we went to discover the Sassi (stones) and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera. This cave dwellings amazing spot occupied since the Paleolithic to the present day is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
